While these stories are not without some merit, I found them to be a bit preachy for my tastes. They also had a bit more cleverly sparkling descriptions of every wondrous thing, from the most inconsequential of dewdrops upon the summer rose, to the glittering azure waves of the steadfast ocean, to the delicate pools of lace that lapped upon the dainty feet of the lovely princesses. It was just a bit too much for me.The plots were, as I mentioned, rather on the preachy side. It's mostly 'be kind to your neighbors' stuff, though the first tale seemed slightly anti-feminist. Still, not bad, and since they aren't traditional tales, there's a certain uniqueness to them if you're looking for something different.
There's no active table of contents, and the illustrations are missing, but the captions are still frustratingly in place.
Also, Weir does not seem to be a real place.

I first read these tales when I was a child (I'm in my 60's now)and I still have the original book, which is now in tatters. I was enchanted with them as a child and still enjoy them now. The stories are, of course, about the triumph of goodness and virtue; isn't that what most children's fairy tales are about? They're sweet, and heartwarming, and charmingly written and a refreshing break from the standard tales that everyone knows. And if you don't know what a grimalkin is, well, I've known since I was a child...and this book is the reason why.
I had jus read the Sister's Grimm series, and I could not get into this one because it was too similar, and yet too different if you understand what I mean.
....these tales rock. I've never read the like. Please give them a try. They are True stories. And for a Fairy Tale enthusiast, that is all that matters.
PS And then there is the cat.......
The stories are all new to me. You will not find these amongst the tales of the Brothers Grimm. I might have arranged the stories in a different order, perhaps. But overall a fine collection of tales.
